The Shambles of Maamtrasna

City of Books

In 1882, three men were wrongfully sentenced to death for the murder of a family of five in Maamtrasna, County Mayo. The case, described as "one of the gravest miscarriages of justice in Irish history", is the subject of this edition of City of Books. Professor Margaret Kelleher, author of The Maamtrasna Murders: Language, Life and Death in Nineteenth-Century Ireland, and Justice Peter Kelly, former president of Ireland's High Court, discuss the political context in Dublin's historic Green Street Courthouse, where the trials were held.

City of Books is a podcast supported by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature in association with MoLI. Produced and presented by Martina Devlin. Music by Daragh Dukes.
